Utility features
- The utility enables data copying from bad HDD to both a destination disk and image file.
- During coping section having bad sectors can be skipped.
- The utility enables to copy only sectors chains concerning to files which you are interested
in without accessing to other sections of bad HDD.
- In case of unstable read HDD data copying by means of statistic method is possible.

The main rule of data recovery from bad HDD is that. HDD can fail at any moment therefore
number of access attempts to a bad HDD must be minimal. This point is the base
for most of concepts embedded in the utility.
Both a file-image and a physical drive with equal or larger capacity can be a destination
device. Afterwards the image-file can be copied to another HDD or analyzed by other programs
created for working with image-files. Besides the image-file can be connected to the system
as a virtual disk and various external utilities (for example, R-Studio, Windows Explore)
dont notice they are working with the file. All process is as the same as by working
with a physical drive.

Sector copying of some HDD can take a lot of time (days or weeks). You should apply some skill
in order to speed up the process. The simplest thing is that. If there is some little
number of bad-sectors one after another it is possible to assume there is a pack
of bas-blocks and to skip much number of sectors. By means of that the process accelerates
very much and losses are minimal.
On the other hand paths to some files which should be recovered are known. OS by accessing to these files
is hanging up because besides records relating to a concrete directory tree analyses a lot of other directories.
But it is enough to mark for copying to the destination drive only sections having files we are interested in without
copying others. A feature like this allows you to diminish time which is necessary for creating a copy of bad HDD.
It is also possible to read data by the statistic method. It means to read
data some times and to write in every place data which was read from this place most times.
This method is appropriate if HDD return data unstably.

For realization of all these methods a concept of the map was entered. For every sector
of the bad HDD there is the only appropriate element of the map which shows state of the
sector.
The process can be interrupted and started many times because it bases on the card which
shows current state. You can interrupt copying for urgent repair and after that load and start the process
from the same point. If you selected insufficient number of files and want to copy others
you can select them and copy. If you copied everything but some missed (because of many BAD-blocks)
sections have useful information you should remark «Missed» into «It must
be copied» and execute the process. All of copied files will not be modified. You needn?t
be afraid of any additional process takes a lot of time because of repeated accesses.
There will be no repetition. Time will be taken for a new operation only.

During selecting files the map is «greening», because it is necessary to read
some service information for file analyze. Information is read and its auto-writing to the destination
drive is executing. If afterwards the information is necessary (during the second pass
or because of other conditions) all «green» sectors will be read from the destination
drive but not from the source.
A typical operation during data recovery from bad HDD is replacing heads. But there can be some
problems. For example, you managed to find compatible heads. Writing servo-marks takes place after HDA
was made. HDD loses servo-marks during jumping from a disk to a disk even if you chose
a skew angle of heads axis. In a better case the process is executing with delays
in a worse case there are taps of magnetic heads.
The worst case is that. HDD has got heads 1 and 2 switched on. You have got a compatible
HDA with heads 0 and 1 and HDA with heads 2 and 3, but you havent got a good
HDA block with heads 1 and 2.
Separate copying every head is appropriate in both cases. It is necessary to copy all
data relating to head 0 after that all data relating to head 1 and so on. (In case
of two HDA at first you must copy data from head 1 after that change HDA and copy data from head 2).
During data copying speed of access to HDD is very important. The more speed the faster
data is copying. Taking into consideration current HDD capacities copying in mode PIO takes
a lot of time. In order to increase the speed twice as it was 32-bit mode
of access to HDD is entered in the adapter HRT of version L23 and newer.

The utility allows you temporarily to connect adapter HRT as the system adapter.
In this case the system will consider HDD connected to the adapter as a familiar HDD.
It is useful for HDD which never can be switched off and from which it is necessary
to read a few number of files. In this case it is sufficient to repair
HDD by means of complex HRT then to mount the adapter in the system and copy fast
necessary files.

Some HDD with bad defect-lists havent got any problems of reading but data reading begins
with shift. Every lost defect causes shift by one sector. Displacement can be both positive and
negative. The utility allows you to compensate amassed displacements.
Compensation is programmed in absolute values (not to take into account previous values).
It allows to enter new records in proportionate to finding shifts without damage
of the old translator.

The utility supports file systems FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, EXT2FS, HFS, HFS+.
You can save files from bad HDD to the project directory or you can mark in the map
sectors belonging to files which should be copied.

It is possible the partition table cant be read because it is disposed
in any bad-block. In this case you can edit the table manually. For edit you must double click
on the record. The edit window will be displayed.

Sometimes HDD has got few bad-blocks but its file system is destroyed. There are directories
in the disk but references from root nodes to them are lost (for example, because
of viruses). By means of the utility you can find these directories. Scan of the
whole surface relating to selected partitions will be made and all found directories will
be disposed in directory tree.
In many cases it is necessary to make separate coping by heads. Therefore
start of complex HRT special utilities is necessary because these utilities have translation
methods for any concrete HDD.
The utility checks active licenses in card HRT automatically and allows to select only
activated utilities of the complex.
